• What is Habitat for Humanity?

An international non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing Ministry, founded in 1976. Its main goal is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness all around the globe.

In the past, Habitat has built more than 250,000) houses around the world (1,200 in Canada) – which provided over 1 million people with safe & affordable shelter.

Over 200 homes are built a year in Canada, and over 10,000 total are built internationally ( that’s one new home every 21 minutes)

• How does it work?

Habitat volunteers give up their labour and time, donation, money and materials.
These volunteers build or repair simple, decent homes with help of the newly selected home-owner /families.

These homes are not given away to the new home-owner, but are then sold to them at a no-profit price and financed through affordable loans. 
Cost of a new home can run between $800.00 in small developing countries, to around $60,000 in North America.

• How do you, and Rijus Home & Design fit it?

With over 180 custom projects designed a year, we run into our share of additions/renovations.
With these additions/renovations, our clients (the home owner) sometimes are replacing their existing kitchen, bathrooms and are demolishing existing structure.

These materials can be donated to Habitat for Humanity Restore Project.
Instead of taking all your quality old countertops, sinks, toilets, lumber to the dump they can be donated to Habitat and put back to use.
Habitat then takes the used materials and sells them at fractional price and the proceeds go back to help fund the construction of a home for a poverty stricken family.  Yearly the Restore program generates enough proceeds to build another 10 more homes.

 We at Rijus Home & Design felt the need to provide an outlet to people in the area as a means to help out Habitat for Humanity, and help the environment as this Restore process stops the channelling to trash to our land-fills and put them back to good use.
